5 Facts about Memorial Day

Many Americans will gather with family and friends each year for Memorial Day, most enjoying a 3 day weekend. What do you really know about this holiday?

1. It was first observed on May 30, 1868. The holiday used to have a fixed date of May 30, regardless of which day the holiday fell on. In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday to be observed on the last Monday of the month.

2. Tradition dictates that the American flag should be lowered to half-staff from dawn until noon on Memorial Day.

3. The holiday was first called Decoration Day as the intent was for people to decorate the graves of their loved ones who had died in the Civil War.

4. Beginning in the late 1950's, a tradition began to place small American flags at the head of each gravestone in Arlington National Cemetery on the Thursday before Memorial Day. The cemetery is guarded throughout the weekend to ensure that the flags stay in place.

5. Memorial Day weekend is known as the unofficial start to summer in addition to the start of launching summer blockbuster hits. Movies such as Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Hangover Part II, and Men in Black III were all released Memorial Day weekend.

This Chart Shows Which Home Renovations Add the Most (and Least) Value

by masspa 19. March 2014 20:52

When it comes to adding on to your home or making a few renovations, it's easy to assume that whatever you invest in a remodel will get recouped on your home's value. This is not necessarily the case. Remodeling Magazine has some stats on which ones are most worth the investment, though.P

The magazine compared the affect of 35 remodeling projects on the resale value of homes in 101 US cities and compared the increase to the cost of the project. Among their findings, they discovered that adding a steel front door, building a deck, or making an attic bedroom were among the most financially beneficial add-ons.P

It's important to note, however, that these changes are still determined by the housing market itself. According to the 2014 report, none of the surveyed additions recouped more than 100% of their cost, but around 2009-2010, adding a steel door could actually add more value to your home than you spent. So, this information is perhaps best used as a guide to determine what buyers value moreso than how much you can justify spending. Also be sure to check out our previous coverage on home improvement projects that are definitely worth more than they cost.
